Task 8 Patterns Galore

For task 8 we were asked to create a pattern using letterforms, in order to create interesting compositions. After which we were asked to experiment with colours and variation. At first I created a pattern using the letter S. Like the one shown on the left here and although I really liked the shape of the patterns and the variation, I discovered that it was somewhat hard to bring variation in colour in this pattern, because it was very hard to connect the patterns. Therefore, I started anew, this time with the letter B, as shown below. Afterwards, I realised that of course I could have added colour to the pattern by distinguishing the inner parts and the outer parts, and realised that this could have yielded very nice results. But by then I had already made the other pattern and coloured that. It was definitely easier to make a pattern from Bs, because the letter is quite static and closed off, whereas the S is very curvy, so slightly harder to weave into each other. With the B there was more possibility for overlapping areas with different colours. But most of all I was impressed to see, how different Letter forms could yield to such different patterns with different feels.

In this pattern I used very bold colours, and although one might initially think that they do not go together, since they appear to be contrasting colours, they work out quite all right, I think. This might be because all of the colours are in the same bold hue and colouring. Or it might be because each colour is also paired with a more complementary colour. Green is paired with Blue, Orange is paired with yellow, and red with purple. These combination used consistently throughout the work, create a sort of symmetry.
Task 9 Poster Reimagined

For task 9 we were asked to recreate one of the posters we found inspirational in the first week. I chose the poster for Black Swan, by La Boca. I really liked the use of negative space and repetition in this poster, as well as the simplicity and straightforwardness. In addition, the colour combination perfectly communicated the feel of the film, which has an eerie vibe to it. The red in the poster really contrasts the off-white colour of the background. Red being the only outspoken colour in the composition brings it to the foreground, perfectly communicating the feeling of the film.
For my interpretation of the poster I changed the movie, but I wanted to keep most elements of this poster. The movie my poster is based on is the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In this movie one of the main plot devices is a white stag which Harry (the protagonist) conjures up. The image of the White stag keeps returning throughout the movie franchise and is a very important image. Therefore, I chose it as a substitute for the ballerina in the La Boca poster. I used the same repetition and negative space as they did by repeating the stags and making them smaller and smaller as they progress, which makes it seem as if the stag is coming forward. However, because the stag is already white, I could not have the background in an off-white colour as well, because that would risk losing the contrast. Therefore, I went for a blue instead, however, trying to keep it with the same feel and the same hue, so a more pastel-like (but not really) blue. Duck-egg blue. Because the design only has one main image (namely the stag), I kept the same simplicity as in the Black Swan Poster.
